New Post on NTPS Blog!: 5 Common Nose Problems a Rhinoplasty can Fix Surgery to correct or improve the appearance and function of the nose can take many forms, and all are considered rhinoplasty surgery. While there are many medical applications of rhinoplasty, “nose jobs” can also have a purely cosmetic purpose. As you consider whether to have rhinoplasty surgery, it is helpful to understand the kinds of problems that are most successfully corrected by surgery. Below we have described a few of the most common procedures, the problems they correct, and what you can expect from these surgeries. Broken nose One of the most common medical functions of rhinoplasty surgery is to repair structural damage to the nose following a bad break. This may simply involve reshaping the cartilage that has been displaced or damaged, but may also require additional surgery to reset shattered nasal bones. The goal of this surgery is to restore a normal shape to the nose and maintain clear airways, but cosmetic perfection should not be expected from a typical corrective rhinoplasty. Deviated septum Although they often result from a broken nose or other injury, a deviated septum can also occur independently of injury. If it is bad enough, deviation of the septum, which is a piece of cartilage running down the middle of the nose, can seriously impair breathing. Surgeries of this kind can be especially helpful for very active individuals that need unrestricted airflow for maximum cardiovascular function. Changing the shape of the nostrils Many patients are unhappy with the shape of their nostrils, finding them too wide, too narrow, or otherwise unsightly. Surgery to alter the nostrils can be fairly invasive, as the entire structure of the nose will need to be altered. Airflow restriction needs to be considered, and may limit the degree of alteration that is possible, so make sure you have a clear idea from your surgeon about what to expect. Bulbous nose tip A nose tip that is disproportionately rounded or bulging compared to the rest of the nose can be corrected surgically by a number of different approaches. Most surgeons approach from within the nostril to reshape the cartilage supporting the skin at the tip end of the nose. Following surgery, the skin of the nose will contract over time to match the shape of the tissue underneath. One advantage of this approach is that superficial scarring is almost nonexistent. Prominent nasal hump Similarly to a bulbous nose tip, a disproportionately large nasal hump can be correct by removing excess cartilage from within. The specific pieces of cartilage affected by surgery will vary depending on the shape and size of your nose, but your surgeon should be able to demonstrate very clearly what specific changes will be made. Cosmetic surgery to correct or repair the nose is a common and highly refined technique with great flexibility. Scheduling a consultation is the best way to learn more about how rhinoplasty surgery can help you get the results you are looking for.
