“New Slaves” explains how overlooked forms of racism manifest themselves for poor and rich African Americans in the post-Jim Crow epoch. Mr. West asserts that poor African Americans experience racism when they are followed and watched as soon as they walk in a store, and rich African Americans encounter racism when corporations lure them into contracts that they are not able to understand perspicuously. The song suggests that postmodern capitalism can be exploitative to African Americans in explicit and indirect ways.
