New Walmart at former Suburban Plaza shopping center in Hamilton could open by early 2016 HAMILTON — Nearly two years after winning approval from the township, the demolition and redevelopment of the ghost town Suburban Plaza shopping center is on the horizon. As part of the project, much of the existing 244,000-square-foot plaza is slated to be demolished. Peter Abrams, whose company Abrams Realty and Development purchased and will redevelop the Nottingham Way site, said that the process could begin by the end of February. Soon after, Walmart contractors will begin constructing a 160,000-square foot store, including a grocery department and garden center, as Abrams’ contractors redevelop the remainder of the site into The Court at Hamilton. “While Walmart is being built, we’ll be making the rest of the project look like the pretty pictures we presented to the township,” Abrams said. The project has been through ups and downs since July 2012, when Abrams first announced that Walmart had signed on to be the anchor tenant of Suburban Plaza, a 40-year-old eyesore on one of the town’s busiest highways.
