New Years Resolution - Go on a diet to lose weight? Diets dont work! At least they work short term but If you want to lose weight and keep it off, you need to change the way you think about food, change how you grocery shop, how you cook and adapt a new way of eating. When you take it away from being a diet and it becomes a lifestyle. Most diets will have you constantly counting calories or going hungry because you have eaten your quota according to whatever diet plan you are on. You will adapt an eating plan and perhaps stick to it until you achieve your desired weight or you fall off the wagon. Then over time you will return to your usual habits and the weight will go back on, sometimes even more weight than you lost! Diets leave you feeling like you are depriving yourself and you are counting your points/calories until you can reward yourself with a treat. Dont try to do it all at once. Make small changes every couple of days. Here are some examples:- 1) Start your day with warm water with fresh squeezed lemon juice - this will kick start your metabolism and helps with weight loss 2) Leave the white carbs out of your meals eg. bread, white potatoes, pasta, rice. Instead double your vegetables. Homemade beef burgers are great between crisps cos lettuce or portobello mushrooms instead of a bun 3) Chose olive oil and balsamic vinegar dressing instead of a thick creamy sauce 4) Snack on nuts or fruit instead of chocolate or crisps or biscuits. Nuts are not fattening when eaten in moderation, they are full of good healthy fats, omega 3s, protein and minerals 5) Sodas, including diet sodas are full of sugar and nasty chemicals. Drink filtered water flavoured with lemons or slices of cucumber - really refreshing. 6) Dont buy readymade meals, frozen pizzas and chips. Instead make your own meals, with fresh ingredients, that way you know exactly what is going into it and you can avoid all the hidden nasties including MSG and bad fats. Its really not that difficult to adapt a healthy lifestyle. But you need to make conscious decisions and really want to improve your diet. By making healthy choices you will find you will automatically lose weight - without even trying! The added bonus is that you will have a better immune system and better health. Of course it is important to exercise on a regular basis. Realistically 3-4 times a week would be best. You might not always be in the humour to push yourself but it is always worth it. By making small changes at a time, these little steps will eventually result in a new lifestyle. In time you will look and feel so good that you will wonder why you didnt adapt this lifestyle long ago. Wishing you all a Happy and Healthy New Year and a New You
