New York City Update: Week #2 It is hard to believe I have been in New York for two weeks. It continues to be a wild ride. The first order of news is I got a job. I have been hired as a Server at the new Ralph Lauren Restaurant opening its location in NYC. It is quite exciting and humbling to be hired at such a high end restaurant. They have two other locations in Paris and Chicago with NYC being their third location. I begin training on November 6, 2014. Until then I will be looking for odd jobs (if theyre available), trying to be frugal with money (which is difficult with so much performing art here!), and continue to work on the apartment. The apartment process is still ongoing. I have an application for an apartment and almost had everything go through, but a technicality on my end has paused the process. Because I do not have a guarantor with my application I am trying to work with the agency about what we can do so I can get this apartment. If it doesnt work out, I have a Plan B: Subletting. Ill be moving around from place to place until I can hopefully make enough money as reflected in my tax return so I do not need a guarantor and can get on a lease. This has definitely been an interesting, exhausting move. I still love the city, but what I find is a roller coaster. One day is completely exciting and everything appears to go as planned, but the next day everything seems to go wrong or nothing seems to be happening at all. Or like yesterday one of the best things happen followed by the worst. On the other hand, isnt that what life is like no matter where one lives? Therefore, just like I did in Spokane, I keep moving forward and see all the beautiful things in NYC that inspire me and caused me to want to move here in the first place. Ironically, I had two ideas come to me right after the gym today. One was an idea for a devised project. Incredibly simple premise, but one I am going to start researching. Should more inspiration come forth, it will be time to start looking for a rehearsal/performance space and find folks with whom to work. Very exciting for me as I am getting the creating itch. Also terrifying as I worry about working with NYC folks. However, as I have mentioned in my website multiple times, the solution to fearful paralysis is to just move. One never knows or learns unless they put themselves out there and try it. Sounds like a move I made recently. ;-) I also have an idea for an essay I want to write. However, that will have to wait until my graduate school applications are written and sent. :-) Once again, thank you all for your support and the encouragement yall send me on a daily basis. It is completely necessary during my navigating in a city I barely know. I love each and every one of you! Until next time, Justin M. Schlabach
