New York Times’ racist cartoon against Mangalyaan - TopicsExpress

New York Times’ racist cartoon against Mangalyaan success: They cannot actually believe that Asians and Indians can manage it on their own. New York Times seems to have got it all wrong. The top newspaper in United States seems to have been unable to come to term with the massive success that India has achieved in the space industry. India’s space agency ISRO has been able to successfully put its Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM) or Mangalyaan into the Martian orbit. This is despite the fact that United States did everything to stop India from achieving success in the field that the big powers thought was the sole prerogative of their own and no one else. They imposed sanctions and forced other nations not to sell or transfer space or relevant technologies to India. So it is needless to say that they are actually feeling disappointed by the success that India has achieved. This was a massive achievement and the fact that Indian spaceship didn’t make a single wrong move proves the dexterity of the Indian space scientists and the technology that the nation uses. new york time racist cortoonIt was really disappointing to see a racially inspired cartoon in New York Times trying to belittle Indian achievement in space. It is needless to say that the newspaper has been pulled badly by many people on social media handles like Twitter and Facebook. The worst thing was the fact that this racial cartoon was published while the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi was there. For many people it was one of the most discriminatory cartoons in a long time. NYT cartoon showed India trying to knock at a door. Behind the door two serious looking white old men were talking among themselves. The ones inside the room were shown to be US and Russia, space super powers that were unwilling to allow India enter the select space club. India was represented by a farmer in traditional north Indian clothes and a somber looking cow. But alas the likes of New York Times or others can do no harm to India now. While New York Times may not like to see Indian space program prosper and Indian space agency ISRO being taken seriously, United States and its top space organization NASA seems to be warming towards India. This seems more true after the success of India’s Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM (Mangalyaan). This was the first time that an Asian nation did it and did it in the first attempt itself. US had flopped four times before putting its Mars orbiter into Martian orbit. Now United States has agreed to take their relations to a new level altogether. India and the United States have joined hand and announced the formation of a NASA-ISRO Mars working group. This will help the two nations and their space agencies to co-operate more formally on the issue of Mars exploration. United States and India are going to be long term partners now. There is another positive development in this regard too. The two space agencies have also signed another agreement that particularly defines roles in the building of the NASA-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR). This will be reportedly launched six years from now in 2020.
