New York Transit Museum Seeks Two College Aids The New York Transit Museum is requesting 2 paid college aides to perform the following responsibilities. The Museum collects, preserves, and presents materials relating to the region’s land-based public transportation, past and present, focusing on the agencies of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority and their predecessor companies. The museum is moving our collection including 7,000 artifacts, 340 flat-file drawers with drawings (615 drawers total), 3,750 loose drawings (without the flat-file drawers), 4675 boxes of photographs and documents (1950 linear feet), and 500 books to a new off-site storage facility. The college aids would, prior to the move, help complete an inventory of all artifacts and archival material to be moved to the new space, document material with no database record, photograph artifacts, create a condition report, make sure each artifact is labeled with its accession number, assign new location address, and update database records in the museum’s Collection Management database. When everything is moved into the new space each artifact and archival collection will have to be checked for damage, a second condition report created, and database records updated with new location and condition. Qualifications and experience Students in archives management, library and information science, records management, museum studies, conservation/preservation, history, or urban studies who have had coursework or experience in archives and artifact management, art handling, cataloging and classification, preservation administration, indexing and abstracting and/or historical research methods are encouraged to apply. The applicant must also be detail-oriented and able to accurately transcribe numbers, dates, and captions; must have legible handwriting; and must be able to lift forty-pound boxes of materials. ******************************** The position is 20-28 hours a week. Please contact Carey Stumm, Archivist carey.stumm@nyct with your resume and a cover letter if you are interested in applying.
