New York is a complex city. It is unparalleled in terms of density(1), height(2), and underground public transportation(3). As we build location products, these unique aspects of the city provide many challenges to engineer a great experience for users who want to find places nearby. GPS signals can bounce off buildings, places can share addresses or be stacked on top of another, and phones can get confused when you are underground. Depending on where you are in New York, it is likely that you are within a few blocks of hundreds of different restaurants and other businesses, of which hundreds are opening and closing every year. At our old Facebook NY office in midtown, there were literally twenty Starbucks within a quarter mile. Yesterday, I gave a talk at Internet Week(4) about the unique challenges we face in order to build a high quality experience for people who want to share their location with friends through status updates, photos, and across the Facebook platform. It’s a great ecosystem to be tackling these hard problems because despite these challenges, New York is the perfect place for people with the talent to engineer these great experiences. From high powered academic institutions, to math and science heavy industry, to product focused media businesses, New York is a breeding ground for both mobile engineers and data scientists. These are the types of people who are able to solve problems ranging from natural language processing and machine learning, search ranking and search quality, and mobile to build a great experience with places everywhere in the world. If you can solve these problems in New York, you can solve them anywhere.
