As early as the initial years of her husbands first term as president, her shopping sprees at Tiffanys in New York caused a sensation due to her lavish spending. It is known that she bought a pair of sapphire earrings from Van Cleef & Arpels for $1,250,000 in April 1982 [this pair is still unaccounted for.] Another known purchase was for a selection of antique jewelry costing $234,000. Jewelry purchases in November 1984 amounted to $411,746 for emeralds, rubies and one 519 carat sapphire.
