New arrival June 13 - We will call her Nita. She came from the area of New Liskeard Ontario. Thank you Wild at Heart Wildlife Refuge in Lively near Sudbury Ontario for caring for this 5 month old bear cub initially and then meeting Mike part way to save some distance. She is about normal sized at 7.7 pounds or 3.5 kg. What is not normal is the injury to her hind foot. She has lost parts or all of her 5 toes and has no claws remaining on the foot. We are not sure what would have caused this. Our best guess is a trap caught this little bear and tore off part of her foot. It is not a fresh wound and appears to be healing. We do not know what happened to her mother. Photos by Krista.
