New capital to burn a hole Hyderabad: The Seemandhra government - TopicsExpress

New capital to burn a hole Hyderabad: The Seemandhra government will have to spend at least Rs 2.5 lakh crore to develop a capital city with proper infrastructure. Sources said that the new capital could also be an entirely new city in the vicinity of an existing city along the lines of planned capital cities like Naya Raipur, Gandhinagar and Bhubaneshwar. Experts from IIT-Delhi and city-based Vaada Foundation, who have been studying the infrastructural requirements for a capital city even prior to the announcement of bifurcation, say that a minimum long-term investment of Rs 2.5 lakh crore would have to be made for the new city. The most important requirement would be extensive transport facilities like an international airport, road transport and connectivity to all towns and cities of the state. P. Suresh Raju, founder of Vaada, said, “Urban transport, including trains and buses, is extremely important. Non-motorised transport is also important.” Other important infrastructure requirements would be power transmission and distribution grids, backup supply facilities, underground sewerage and water supply lines, solid waste management facilities and many more. The study report would be submitted to the Centre’s committee to be formed to deal with the bifurcation. Last year, a Comprehensive Transportation Study commissioned by the HMDA had stated that Hyderabad would need about Rs 5,000 crore each year to improve the transportation system.
