New helmets and refurbished bicycles were awarded Sunday to 33 - TopicsExpress

New helmets and refurbished bicycles were awarded Sunday to 33 children ages 5-12 who participated in the Rockville Recreation and Parks Department’s “Terrific Bikes” program. The bikes were collected and reconditioned by volunteers from Bikes for the World, a nonprofit that donates bicycles to deserving people in Rockville and around the globe. Helmets were donated by the Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service. Children earned the bikes by completing at least six responsible acts, such as perfect school attendance for one month or volunteering at a charitable organization for an hour. Many did much more, including one 9-year-old who earned a bike for his younger brother so he could learn to ride. To learn more about the program visit rockvillemd.gov/bicycling and select “Bike Award and Bicycle Recycling Programs.” If you are interested in donating a bike to Terrific Bikes, call 301-461-5349. May is Bike Month in Rockville. The City is celebrating with rides, safety class and more throughout the month. Learn more at rockvillemd.gov/bikemonth.
