New high court for Lautoka About $35m will be spent on the construction of a new high court in Lautoka following its ground breaking ceremony today. Speaking at the ceremony, Chief Justice Anthony Gates says that if the western division develops, the justice system within the division must be able to respond to society’s needs. “Those who have been judges here have realized that the facilities are inadequate for a high court. Labasa has a nice court building Suva is getting new facilities and the west badly needed this building and I think it will be a significant development to the city of Lautoka which needs a boost to its financially economic future.” The building will have a provision of 18 courtrooms and will have 7 levels, making it the tallest building in Lautoka city. Justice Anthony Gates adds they will also focus on other court complex in Lautoka beginning with extension work to Rakiraki and an additional court room in Nadi Magistrates Court. However, they are also looking for a new site for Ba- away from flooding in the rivers while Tavua will have a new magistrate and a new court site. Meanwhile, there will be no changes to the Sigatoka Magistrates Court.
