Chief Charles Lightwalker says, Once you have obtained a Pipe, you will want to have it properly awakened. Traditionally, a Native American Elder, a Ceremonial Pipe Holder, Medicine Person or other spiritual person does this. This is the proper way to awaken a Pipe. But in the case of your personal Pipe, you can do it yourself if necessary if you do not have any other option. It is important to seek instructions from the Pipe itself. Also remember once a Pipe is awakened to always vary the ceremony a little each time you fill the pipe, to avoid creating a rut, which can hinder the Pipe’s ability to fully assist you. You should always seek the input of the spirit of the Pipe each time you pray with it. The idea is for you to have a living relationship with the Pipe not a lifeless, powerless ceremony that is dogmatic.
