New kid on the block - we continue our series on the voting for the rookie of the year award. Its the American League and the year of 1952. For the 1st time the letter A can be found on the winners cap and the ONLY time with the word Philadelphia can be found across his chest. Pitcher Harry Byrd, post a record of 15-15, with 2 saves and era of 3.31. The same Byrd that would have a NL worst 20 loses the next season of 1953. Byrd would pitch 9 seasons in the majors. He would just edge out St. Louis Browns catcher Clint Courtney and Boston Red Sox catcher Sammy White. Byrd would get 9 votes, Courtney, 8 and White 7. Courtney (btter know later for his huge knuckle ball glove), would have 5 homeruns, 50 rbis and bats .286. Sammy White had 10 homeruns, 49 rbis and hits .281
