New outlook, Volume 112 By Alfred Emanuel Smith 1916 Page 156 The Albanians are the oldest inhabitants of the Balkan peninsula—the descendants of the ancient Pelasgians and Illyrians. Under Scanderbeg they saved Europe by beating back the Turk. Although a small race, they have given to the world several great men, including Pyrrhus, Alexander the Great, Saint Jerome, Constantine the Great, Pope Clement XI, and Crispi. That their racial capacity for self- government is high is shown by the fact that their leaders have been Catholics, Protestants, Greek Orthodox, and Mohammedans, whereas among the other Balkan races religious persecution rages. The Albanians are a militant race, and amid their almost impregnable mountains they could wage a guerrilla warfare against any invader, which would cease only with their extermination.
