New pet supply store BEST IN SHOW recently opened at 545 Castro Street near 18th Street. A friend of mine, also a wheelchair user, told me he adopted a cat at SFSPCA a couple weeks ago and was given a discount certificate listing BEST IN SHOW and other pet supply stores, only to find out when he got to BEST IN SHOW, that they effectively DO NOT SERVE WHEELCHAIR USERS because they have a ONE-STEP OBSTACLE that bars our admission to the premises. I phoned over there this weekend and asked to speak to the owner but was given the run-around by a terribly rude voice who insisted I could not be put in touch with the owner who was right there at the time. WTF are they afraid of? The truth of their DIS-service to the community? FOR A GAY-CENTERED BUSINESS IN THE HEART OF THE CASTRO, HOME OF SO MANY PEOPLE LIVING WITH AIDS AND OTHER DISABILITIES, THIS IS UNCONSCIONABLE. CALLING ON ALL SOCIAL JUSTICE ADVOCATES TO COME TO THE AID OF THEIR CONSTITUENTS: Please help "enlighten" BEST IN SHOW about being the WORST IN ACTION??? Call 864-7387 and tell them to install a wheelchair ramp, unless they want to invite a customer to resort to the only recourse available to PWDs under the Americans with Disabilities Act/ADA ... THE COURTS. Or send them that message at bestinshowsf.
