Photo is a screen grab from the video A baby elephant in a nature reserve in China found itself trapped in an empty water storage pit with no way out. Making it more difficult was that rain made the edges of the earthen pit slippery, preventing the elephant from climbing out of the 8-foot hole. Local villagers in the Yunnan Province heard the animal’s squealing cry for help on Tuesday and summoned rescuers. The BBC News China posted video of how the rescuers finally managed to save the baby elephant: “Looking at the traces at the scene, it probably fell into it [Monday],” one of the rescuers said, according to the Daily Mail . “Because it rained [Monday], the ground around the pit was slippery.” Police managed to lower one side of the pit using a hoe to dig away some dirt. With onlookers rooting it on, the tired elephant couldn’t quite make it out, but after a little more digging and about an hour’s effort, it finally got a foothold and climbed out to freedom. Once out of the pit, the baby elephant turned around, as if to acknowledge his rescuers, then hightailed it out of there amid the cheering rescuers.
