Nope. Both won, just as they’ve been winning nearly all the critics’ prizes, and it’s hard to see them being challenged at the Oscars. Arquette and Simmons are good, honorable, hard-working actors who, for once in their careers, have galvanizing roles that’s makes everybody stand up and take notice. Academy members will feel good voting for them. 2. It’s still worth it to prepare a good speech. We’re a decade or so beyond the days when otherwise elegant, intelligent winners like Nicole Kidman and Gwyneth Paltrow turned into blubbering messes at the microphone, but seriously folks, nominees need to put some work into what they’re going to say if their name is called. You’re talking to a huge TV audience, not just the room. Of course, not everybody can be Wes Anderson who always comes prepared with witty material—this time, thanking the foreign press voters by their first names—but I expected better from George Clooney who, knowing in advance he was winning the Lifetime Achievement Award, proceeded to wing it.
