New program to save energy for apartment livers A newly launched national initiative encourages apartment owners and managers to improve energy efficiency across their building’s profile, potentially saving 20 to 30 per cent in electricity costs. The Smart Blocks program provides an on-line energy efficiency toolkit for residential owner corporations, building facility managers and contractors around Australia. The Federal Government has backed development of the program with more than $1 million through the Energy Efficiency Information Grants (EEIG) program. “With around 40 per cent of new housing now in medium and high density development and the last census showing that over 24 per cent of Australian households live in strata-type dwellings, this is an important initiative to improve energy efficiency,” Federal Energy Minister, Gary Gray, says. “The program is ground breaking because it seeks to tackle the challenges of improving energy efficiency from the standpoint of an individual consumer living in a strata setting. enviroinfo.au/new-program-to-save-energy-for-apartment-livers/#.Ua8espz4JIE
