New research has shown the extent to which night shifts throw the bodys circadian rhythms into disarray and could have long-term consequences for peoples health. A study at the Sleep Research Centre in Surrey analysed 22 people as they changed from working in the daytime to doing night shifts. It was found that 97 per cent of the genes usually timed to be active at certain parts of the day became out of sync when working patterns were altered. However Chartered Psychologist Professor Alexander Wedderburn from Heriot-Watt University suggested caution over the findings. Read his comments here.
