New survey equipment for super high-rise buildings Recently there has been a high degree of interest in the construction of vertical towers and iconic buildings which present significant challenges from a surveying point of view. Leica Geosystems have developed surveying equipment which step up to these challenges. Constructions of various super high-rise buildings in recent times have highlighted the issue that the surveying processes and methods used to control such high buildings need to be re-evaluated. Examples of such buildings include the Al Hamra tower in Kuwait and Dubai’s Burj Khalifa. Besides being extremely tall, high-rise buildings are usually quite slender. This can present problems during construction as there is often a lot of movement at the buildings’ higher levels. Leica Geosystems has developed a surveying system called the Core Wall Control Survey System (CWCS) which helps to solve this problem. By using networked GNSS (GLONASS and GPS) sensors together with high precision inclination sensors and total stations, the equipment can offer precise and reliable coordinates. These are used to control the position of the climbing formwork systems located at the top of the vertical structure, in this case the tall building under construction.
