New year, new Saints. This past season was a disaster wed all like to forget. So lets look at our future. Ill be doing a position by position analysis of the current roster and what the future may hold for that position. First up for today, is QB. Drew Brees still has 2 years left on his contract and will become an UFA in 2017. Lots of people were calling for his head this year. Admittedly, he did have some poor play, but he is none the less our best option at qb and for now the Saints will only go as far as he takes them. His cap hit this year is a whopping $26.4 million with it going up to $27.4 million next year. He should certainly restructure his contract and even take a cut if he wants to give the Saints a chance to put together another championship winning team before Brees goes. I expect him to more than likely retire once his contract is up. Drews backup, Luke McCown is a free agent this year and I wouldnt expect him to come back. The signing of Ryan Griffin to a two year deal tells me the Saints see potential in him to possibly take over for Drew one day, and I fully expect him to be our #2 qb next year. The fact that he becomes a RFA the same time Drews contract ends indicates to me that the Saints are leaving the door open to retaining him and moving forward with him at the helm, or it gives them the option to go in a different direction if he doesnt pan out. To fill in the third spot the Saints can pick up any number of free agents this year or bring in an undrafted guy to compete for the 3rd spot. Dont be surprised to see the likes of someone like Christian Ponder sitting at #3 on the depth chart next year. What does everyone think? Do you agree, or have something else in mind? ×DatSwampMonster
