Newcastle’s wage bill is around 67% of the revenues for the last financial year, and there will be an attempt to reduce the wage bill by having a mini clear-out of players this summer – and that’s even more likely to happen after the five Frenchmen arrived in January. The clear out will largely be with fringe players, and news today that 20 year-old Mehdi Abeid has been told he can leave the club. And it’s a surprise to us that James Perch, who has just one year left on his four-year deal, will also be available, after James has played well these last couple of seasons, after a terrible first season at Newcastle. But James is a solid player, and would be great for any Championship side looking to be promoted next season, and we have seen he can play anywhere along the back four and in defensive midfield too. But with the versatile Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa and Moussa Sissoko having just been drafted in – they would be preferred to James Perch – and since James will become a free agent next summer, Newcastle will try to flog him this summer for a decent fee. And Newcastle will probably make a profit on James, who signed for around £1M three years ago from Nottingham Forest. The 27-year-old is on holiday in the Nevada desert right now in Las Vegas, along with a number of other Newcastle players, and it seems that Leicester City are keen on him, after they have failed to gain promotion over the last couple of years – being eliminated each time in the play-offs. It seems a fee of £1.5M is what Leicester would be willing to offer for the versatile player. James has made 81 appearances for Newcastle but he has also picked up 21 yellow cards – and it seems Newcastle want more than that £1.5M for a player who has been more than decent in the Premier League over the last two seasons. Newcastle could also look to sell players like Dan Gosling, Gabby Obertan, Mike Williamson and perhaps Romain Amalfitano this summer, and Steve Harper and Danny Simpson will leave at the end of the month when their contracts run out. And yesterday Simpson was being linked with Serie A club Torino in Italy.
