Newly inaugurated Newaygo County commissioner scheduled for arraignment on felony vandalism charge Steven Arnold JohnsonKent County Jail FREMONT, MI – Steven Arnold Johnson, a newly inaugurated Newaygo County commissioner, is scheduled for a walk-in arraignment next week on a felony charge of vandalizing a vehicle at a Fremont car dealership. Johnson, 64, of Fremont is scheduled to be arraigned Monday, Jan. 12, on a charge of malicious destruction of personal property causing between $1,000 and $20,000 in damage, according to a clerk at Newaygo County’s 78th District Court. That’s a felony punishable by up to five years in prison. The arrest warrant charges that Johnson on March 3, 2014, “did willfully and maliciously destroy or injure a motor vehicle at Freedom Chevrolet.” That’s a dealership in Fremont that, according to news reports, Johnson formerly owned. A district court magistrate earlier signed an arrest warrant on that charge. Johnson was arrested Dec. 27 in Kent County and posted a $750 bond, according to the court clerk. He was released that day, according to the Kent County Jail website. Johnson, running as a Republican, was elected Nov. 4 to the Newaygo County Board of Commissioners.
