The Prime Minister was speaking at a panel discussion, part of the US Africa Leaders summit, representing Africa as Ethiopia has been one of the most successful African countries in fighting climate change and increasing agricultural productivity. The discussion focused on building resilience to climate change and its effects on food security and how the United States and Africa could cooperate on this issue. Prime Minister Hailemariam reiterated that this was the time for Africa to formulate climate-smart agricultural initiatives to avert climate shocks. He said the adverse effects on agriculture meant that the GDP of every nation had recently declined by 4% and this needed an immediate and coordinated response by governments. US Secretary of State, John Kerry, said the Malabo agreement and climate smart agriculture programs could be implemented through partnership among governments, civil society, and business community.
