News From Windsor, Ontario: The City of Windsor, Ontario is planning to erect a ‘Memorial in honour of Canadian Peacekeepers’ with an inscription about Canada’s Afghanistan mission. Windsor City council unanimously approved spending up to $100,000 on the proposed memorial in Reaume Park acknowledging the role of the Canadian Armed Forces’ and the sacrifices made as peacekeepers and Canada’s role in Afghanistan. An inscription on the Afghanistan intervention will also be added to the Windsor Cenotaph at City Hall square. The goal is to have the latter installed by May 9, which Prime Minister Stephen Harper recently designated as an annual day to commemorate Canada’s mission in Afghanistan, where 158 Canadian soldiers, including Windsor’s Cpl. Andrew Grenon, were killed. A Canadian diplomat, two aid workers and a journalist were also killed. The city hopes to have the memorial erected by August 9, 2014 which is Canada’s National Peacekeepers’ Day. © 2014 The Windsor Star © 2014 The Ottawa Citizen © 2014 Canadian Heroes
