News Release: DTI beefs up campaign on consumer welfare in Pangasinan BY: APRIL M. MONTES DAGUPAN CITY, Oct. 8 (PIA) – The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI)-Pangasinan is rolling out a series of consumer awareness and protection seminars to keep consumers secure from product purchases. Peter Mangabat, DTI provincial director, said the seminars will increase consumers’ vigilance of their rights pursuant to Republic Act 7394, otherwise known as the Consumer Act of the Philippines. The seminars are part of the Consumer Welfare Month observance this October. In partnership with Panasonic Manufacturing Philippines Corporation, the DTI will hold a Product Standards and Conformance seminar on October 11 at the Star Plaza Hotel here. The seminar is free of charge and open to retailers of electrical products, said Mangabat. It aims to provide the business owners and their staff with information on the quality features of a product so they can differentiate certified electrical products from fake ones, he said. DTI will also hold a series of training among tenants of SM City Rosales and Magic Mall in Urdaneta City to enhance their skills and knowledge in handling consumers, he added. Meanwhile, Mangabat advised the consumers to use and patronize only those certified products covered by the mandatory standards. These are household appliances, electrical and construction materials, auto supply, helmets and Christmas lights, he said. He said consumers and the business establishments should always check the presence of the Product Standards (PS) or Import Commodity Clearance (ICC) product markings as proof that products have passed quality standard requirements.
