News Vigils Held Worldwide for Loretta Saunders Friday , March 28 2014 Vigils were held this week in St. Johns and across the world for Loretta Saunders. VOCMs Andrew Bonia reports. The service held in St. Johns was only one of dozens of vigils held as far away as Ottawa, Norway, and Costa Rica, to remember Loretta Saunders. A few from Lorettas family, including her sister-in-law Paula, read from Lorettas own writings, saying that it was her life experience and the obstacles she had overcome that inspired her to study violence against indigenous women. Members of all three political parties attended, with Aboriginal Affairs Minister Nick McGrath praising their unity in wishing to continue Lorettas work. Loretta said that as an inuk woman, she refused to allow her past to dictate her future. Before her candlelit picture, members of the Inuit community beat drums and performed prayers and songs. At the back of the room an Inuk child sang her own song, oblivious to the vigil as well as to the world in which she is nearly 10 times as likely as other girls to be abducted or murdered - a world Loretta had wanted to change.
