News articles PATIENTS MOERED NURSES Published: Wednesday, 2014/09/03 DOZENS of sick patients were sent away from the Laetitia Bam Day Hospital They were told they could not be helped because some patients moered the nurses. Since Monday, nurses at the hospital in KwaNobuhle, Uitenhage have refused to work after one of them was assaulted by a patient in the trauma section two weeks ago. A waiting patient, Bongiwe Saul (48) said he suffered from asthma and needed medication desperately. Another patient Khulukazi Mpongoshe (63) said she had waited outside from 6am and needed her ARVs. Eastern Cape Health Department spokesman Sizwe Kupelo said: “We sent security officials to assess the situation. A gate will be installed, fencing will be improved and an alarm system will be set up.” Security has also been beefed up at Helen Joseph Hospital after a nurse was allegedly stabbed, assaulted and raped on Friday night by a masked man. Yesterday, Gauteng Health Department spokesman Prince Hamnca said extra security officers were hired and a security committee was formed. The DA’s Jack Bloom said it was shocking that it took days for a statement to be released. Hamca said a case was opened but couldn’t say more,
