News from Ecops With the warmer weather we have experienced recently there is an increased risk of burglary to dwellings due to insecure doors and windows. With this in mind and the approach of the school holiday please consider the following advice to reduce the risk of becoming a victim: 1) Close and lock all doors and windows even if you are at home, remove the keys but ensure easy access to them should they be required in an emergency. 2) Fit window restrictors to allow safer ventilation during the hot weather. 3) Use a door chain or bar before committing to answering your door. 4) Where possible deny access to the rear of your property by the use of high fencing, trellis and lockable gates. 5) Consider fitting security lighting, either PIR or low cost energy efficient dusk to dawn lights. 6) All desirable, expensive or sentimental items should be put out of sight, not visible from doors or windows. Consider investing in an adequate safe, bolted to a solid structure within the property. 7) If you are going away for the weekend make sure one of your family members or a good neighbour is aware and can keep an eye on your property. 8) Consider the use of table lamps with timers – you need to give the impression that your house is occupied. For more information on home security please see the below websites: - cambs.police.uk securebydesign immobilise Strong communities are also a deterrent for burglars – make friends with your neighbours and look out for each other or join your local Neighbourhood Watch scheme.
