Luttrell, Jr., will host a groundbreaking ceremony next week for a new bridge that will eliminate daily traffic delays at a railroad crossing in North Shelby County. The new bridge will cross over the Canadian National-Illinois Central Railroad tracks on Fite Road, just east of Highway 51. The ceremony will be held on Thursday, June 19th, 10:00 a.m., in the parking area of a Memphis Light, Gas and Water Substation at 3065 Fite Road. “This project has been one of my top priorities. Through the years, I’ve met personally with residents in Woodstock and nearby neighborhoods about the traffic delays at the railroad crossing. The bridge will eliminate those backups and, more importantly, emergency vehicles from a nearby Shelby County Fire Station will no longer be delayed by the trains,” said Mayor Luttrell. Along with new railroad bridge, Fite Road between Highway 51 and Raleigh Millington Road will also be straightened to eliminate two 90-degree bends. “Fortunately, acquisition of the right-of-way for the new road and bridge was supported by nearby industries and citizens groups. Additionally, E. I. DuPont De NEMOURS & Company and W.R. Grace & Company donated the land for the project. We’re very grateful for their partnership,” said Tom Needham, Public Works Director for Shelby County Government. The total project cost is $14.8 million with $12.3 million in federal funds and the remaining $2.5 million from Shelby County Government. “The citizens of north Shelby County have anxiously anticipated this day for many years. We appreciate Mayor Luttrells support and dedication to see this project through. When government listens and responds to the needs of citizens, both parties benefit,” said Charlotte T.
