NewsOne wants to give a HUGE shout-out to explorer Matthew Henson, who would have been 147 years old today. Henson is recognized as being a part of the first team to reach the North Pole, after several tries. And even though Henson would lead his group in planting the American flag in the North Pole -- because his original team leader Robert Peary fell sick -- at the time, Peary would get all of the credit. Still, Henson would live on to write an autobiography and have a biography written about his endeavors as the "Negro Explorer." Henson would also be continuously recognized for his achievements posthumously. From the article: "Henson was also honored by the U.S. Navy in 1946 with a medal and was acknowledged by Presidents Truman and Eisenhower before his passing in 1955. Several honors exist marking the legacy of Henson’s travels, including a navy survey ship named after him in 1996. Several national parks and schools also bear his namesake."
