Rhonda Kurasingh on her wedding day, four years ago... IT was not the anniversary gift Miguel Kuarsingh had dreamed of, to be cremating his wife two days before their fourth wedding anniversary. However today Kurasingh will cremate his wife Rhonda Mohan Kuarsingh, 29, after she died following a laparoscopy (laser) surgery at a private medical institution in St Joseph. A post mortem performed at the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex, Mt Hope by pathologist Dr Chunilal Ramjit revealed Rhonda died from a blood poisoning when her colon was ruptured during the operation, last Thursday morning. Kuarsingh, 25, said he and his wife had decided on the operation because she had been diagnosed with polycystic ovaries. They had done research and adhered to different recommendations from persons diagnosed with the condition. “It was a minor operation, a walk in and walk out. I just don’t understand how she is dead now,” Kuarsingh said. The surgery took 30 minutes, he said and Rhonda was discharged from the medical institution. “The doctor said the surgery was successful and everything was okay and they discharged her that day,” he said. Rhonda arrived at her home in Daniel Street Union Village, Couva about midday that day. “She seemed fine for that day and was resting. But on Saturday when she awoke she was not feeling good. She said she was feeling upset inside, sort of like a ‘bad feeling’ she explained to us,” he said. His wife’s condition worsened and by 10 pm on Saturday night she was rushed to the private medical institution. Blood samples were taken from Rhonda. “They told us first that she had problems with her kidney or and it may have been something that she ate,” Kurasingh said. Rhonda was kept in an observation room. “They told us to leave the room, then minutes later they called us inside and said that my wife was a very ill girl,” he said. Subsequently a computerized tomography (CT) scan was performed on Rhonda before she was taken to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Kuarsingh said he was told that more money had to be paid for his wife to be taken to the ICU room. “Time was running out so we told them yes to continue just to get her better, that is all we wanted,” he said wiping his tears. The family had spent an estimated $40,000 to cover the surgical procedure, observation and procedure at the ICU, said Kuarsingh. “At the ICU Rhonda stooped breathing and they had to pump her chest to resuscitate her. They told us her heart had stopped,” he said. Relatives were allowed in the room while the doctor and nurses were around his wife. Rhonda’s heart rate fluctuated, increasing and deceasing speed. “And on the third attempt that was it. She stopped breathing completely,” Kuarsingh wept. “How could I do this, is like I paid for my wife’s death. Our anniversary is Friday we had so much planned, she only did this operation because we wanted to have a baby.” Rhonda’s mother Haffiza Mohan, 53, grieved over the death for her only child. She recalled her daughter last words. “She looked at me with tears in her eyes and said, ‘Mummy I’m in so much pain.’ All I could tell her is, ‘Don’t worry baby everything will be okay,’ and I held on to her hands praying. But my baby was dying,” Mohan wept. Relatives were told the laser during the surgery may have punctured Rhonda’s colon. “My daughter is dead and no amount of money can bring her back. But someone must be held accountable for her death,” Mohan said. The family is calling for answers and is pleading for the intervention of the Health Minister Dr Fuad Khan. Rhonda, who would have been 30 next month, worked as a Clerk II at the Ministry of Health in Port-of-Spain. Efforts to reach officials at the medical institution proved futile.
