Newton Baroque is basking in the glow of yesterdays performance of C.P.E. Bachs Magnificat at our home base at The Second Church in Newton, Mass. As this years choice for our annual Advent cantata, the masterful and challenging Magnificat felt like a truly glorious event, enjoyed thoroughly by musicians and listeners alike. Directed by Andrus Madsen from the fortepiano, soloists included soprano Tracy Cowart, mezzo-soprano Shiba Nemat-Nasser, tenor Tom Oesterling, and bass Ulysses Thomas, joined by the Chancel Choir of Second Church along with a stunning line-up of instrumental players: Daniel Stepner and Julia McKenzie, violin; Laura Jeppesen, viola; Sarah Freiberg Ellison, cello; Jay Elfenbein, bass; Joyce Alper and Cameron Kirkpatrick, oboe; Marilyn Boenau, bassoon; Mary Oleskiewicz and Suzanne Stumpf, flute; and John Aubrey and James Hampson, horn.
