Next Islamaffair Foundation TAYAMMUM [As Simple as it sounds] As salaamu alaykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh. Alhamdulillah, it is another night, when I am happy that I have finally completed my daily prayers (solat). Last week was a blast, discoursing on the subject of “Ghusl” (the ritual bath). I hope we have adopted the URP (Understand, Reflect and Practice) system in learning and that we performed the Ghusl bath, for it is an essential step to assuring that our Solat (prayer) is valid. I am eager to go to bed, so I would curtly explain today’s topic of discussion. Pardon me, I forgot to introduce myself; I am Abu Ismail; the Rhythm on the Block, the presenter of the “Inspired Words” and probably the star of your Wednesdays. Join me as I’ll be taking you through this week’s topic; “Tayammum (Dry ablution)” Well, before venturing into today’s subject, I was reminded of, when I had a discussion with my mum and I could not help but to talk about ‘Death’. She later called on me and said, “One should not be talking of things (death) like that. It is not good to call upon yourself, something no one wants for himself”. Everyone is aware that someday, we will no longer exist but still, we seem terrified when we hear anything (death) it and we do not want to listen to anything pertaining to it (death). Well death is an inescapable reality that should be frequently pondered upon, because it is a definite destination and we should plan for it. What have we prepared for our soul, good deeds or bundles of sins? Know that if you are aware of “DEATH” then you will be conscious of your “ACTIONS”. Tayammum (Dry Ablution) is an act of using earth (soil) as a substitute for water when performing ablution. Initially, it was not part of the Islamic tradition not until, an incident occurred. So, Sit back and relax even though it is a short one. Narrated by `Aisha (the wife of the Prophet): we set out with Allahs Apostle (sallalah aleyhi wasalam) on one of his journeys until we reached Al−Baida or Dhatul−Jaish, a necklace of mine was broken (and lost). Allahs Apostle (sallalah aleyhi wasalam) stayed there to search for it, and so did the people along with him. There was no water at that place, so the people went to Abu−Bakr [As−Siddiq] and said, Dont you see what `Aisha has done? She has made Allahs Apostle (sallalah aleyhi wasalam) and the people stay where there is no water and they have no water with them. Abu Bakr came while Allahs Apostle (sallalah aleyhi wasalam) was sleeping with his head on my thigh, He said to me; You have detained Allahs Apostle (sallalah aleyhi wasalam) and the people where there is no water and they have no water with them. For that reason, he admonished me and said what Allah wished him to say and hit me on my flank with his hand. Nothing prevented me from moving (because of pain) Because of the position of Allahs Apostle on my thigh. Allahs Apostle got up when dawn broke and there was no water. Therefore, Allah revealed the Divine Verse of Tayammum. Then, they all performed Tayammum. Usaid bin Hudair said, O the family of Abu Bakr! This is not the first blessing of yours. Then the camel on which I was riding was caused to move from its place and the necklace was found beneath it. This verse can be found in Surat-ul Nisa verse 43 of the Holy Qur’an where Allah says: “O You who have attained to faith! Do not attempt to pray while you are in a state of drunkenness, [but wait] until you know what you are saying; nor yet [while you are] in a state requiring total ablution, until you gave bathed – except if you are travelling [and are unable to do so]. But if you are ill, or are travelling, or have just satisfied a want of nature, or have cohabited with a woman, and can find no water – then take resort to pure dust, passing [there-with] lightly over your face and your hands. Behold, God is indeed and absolver of sins, much-forgiving.” Now, one interesting factor, which I came to learn about the Tayammum (Dry ablution), was that as long as it is done, you can pray even while being in the state of Impurity; and by that I mean whilst being Junub (impure). Just imagine; it is as if when you are playing a game and then you are given a ‘Power-Up’ that allows you to continue playing without having the fear of losing to obstacles set in your way. However, with all said, it is still not that simple, there are rules guiding the use and practice of Tayammum. When there is shortage of water: but if there is an assurance that water can be gotten then it is preferable that the person perform wudu’ (ablution using water) instead. When water is available but difficult to use: such cases appears when the water available can endanger the life of a person. When the use of water can be dangerous to one’s health: when a person is sick or has an allergic reaction to water such that it could affect the person, then tayammum is recommended. When the time for solat is almost past: if the person feels that the making of wudu’ would allow him to miss that solat for the day then, it is permissible upon him to perform Tayammum. When the available water is sufficient only for the person to remove the najis [ritually unclean] from his/her clothing; such a person can wash his clothes with the available water and perform Tayammum if the water finishes in the process of laundry. The above are still some conditions that if appears, may make the Tayammum permissible but there are still more rules guiding its validity If water becomes available when the person is done performing Tayammum and wants to observe solat then it is incumbent upon the person to perform wudu’ (ablution using water) before observing that solat. If water becomes available after he has gone into ruku (bowing) on the first raka’a then IT IS NOT COMPULSORY for him to stop the prayer and perform wudu. If water become available after the person is through with the solat then it is not compulsory for him to repeat that solat. At this moment, HOW DO WE PERFORM TAYAMMUM? I deliberately did not mention among the first as many may skip the rules guiding it. These rules are very important, for not only you, but in case you are with a group of people, find yourselves in such situation and then no one has an idea on what to do. TAYAMMUM TAKES ONLY FOUR EASY STEPS After your niyyat (intention) [It should not be said aloud], then strike both hands on the ground (earth/soil) not cement, tiles or marble. Rub your hands together to clear away the dust on it and then rub your face. Again, strike both hands on the ground (earth/soil) and clean away the particles on it (the hands). Then, rub the right arm with the left hand and then the left arm with the right hand; from the finger tips to the elbow, just like that of wudu’. Just as there are some conditions that terminate Wudu’, so does those same conditions invalidates Tayammum except those mentioned above that do not. On this note, I close the page on Tayammum and I would appreciate any questions that may follow. Do join my good brother, Abu ‘Aisha, as he is going to take you on a path of knowledge, this Friday.
