Next Wednesday, the 21st of May . Will see some of those who went South 32 years ago. They may pause for thought at some point during their day and theyll either laugh or cry. We will remember them. 32 Years On : The Falklands War A Soldiers Perspective /What I Most Remember From It. I suppose the most abiding memory of the whole war was as to how close we all be came. How we got to know what we were expected to do and did it as second nature. A bit like reading each others minds. Everyone automatically knew when it was their turn to do something, from the most menial task, to the down right suicidal ones. I dont have to close my eyes to see guys faces in my mind, I see them all like it was day, even those that survived. I know the blokes who took their own lives over the years since weve come back. I know the dramas of the inability to cope or find a sense of direction and purpose. Although in the beginning I thought it was a Politicians War , and it was instigated for political and monetary gain. In the end when I met the people themselves and in latter years seeing how the islands have developed, well. I do think it was worth it, for the Falkland Islanders, most especially for the children. There is no way on earth I would ever think that it was not worth it for the 256 souls that were lost , nor the some 650 odd argentinians who suffered a similar fate. Nor the similar number of those tormented souls who have gone from this earth since 82. I am just proud that my professionalism as a soldier, along with the actions of my comrades , of those that constituted the Task Force managed through their actions. The ability for the islanders to chose which flag flies in those far off Iles which shall ever be a part of the British Empire. What I Miss Most I MISS THE LADS. I MISS THOSE CRISP CLEAR NIGHTS , WHEN THE FROST GLISTENS IN THE MOONLIGHT. I MISS THOSE LONELY EXPOSED HILLS, LASHED BY THE RAIN. I MISS THE YOUNG AND INNOCENT FACES , SOME OF WHOM WE’LL NEVER SEE AGAIN . I MISS THE LAUGHTER AND THE CRAIC . I MISS THEIR MORBID HUMOUR , THE CHILDISH PRANKS AND UNSPOKEN LAWS . I MISS THE SENSE OF BELONGING, THAT UNIQUE BOND . I MISS YOUTH AT IT’S BEST , THOUGH I’LL GROW OLD , UNLIKE THE REST. WHAT I MISS MOST ? I MISS THE LADS . Giajl © Jim Love
