Ngako Ngalatchui, an African chieftain from the Bafang region of Bakou, Cameroon has issued a formal apology to William Holland for Bakous role in enslaving his ancestor and trading him in 1772 to be enslaved in Virginia. This is not the first apology for the role of African peoples in the transatlantic slave trade, but it is believed to be the first to be based on DNA evidence tracing an African-American lineage back to a particular time and place in Africa.
