Ngứa tay New Year in Vietnam In Vietnam, our New Year is not on the 1st of January. It takes place late January or early February. It depends on the Lunar Calendar and lasts three days or more. School children usually have about two weeks on this vacation. Frequently we prepare for Tết weeks before. We do a lot shopping because shops, stores, malls and even traditional Vietnamese markets close during the celebrations. we also clean, decorate or renovate our house, buy new clothes for the children and cook special meal. One of the unforgettable dishes in Tết holidays is thit kho that is cooked from pork, eggs, and coconut water. On New Years Day, children wear their new clothes wishing their grandparents, parents.... a happy new year. Then they receive lì xì (red envelopes with lucky money inside). We do believe red is a lucky colour, but we do not use black or white decorations. The special thing on the Lunar New Year is that Tết is everybodys birthday because in Vietnam, a person is one year old when he celebrates his first Tết After New Years Day, we visit our relatives and friends. We traditionally wish our teachers new year on the 3rd day of Tết.Many people go to temples, pagodas, play games ,watch dragon dancers or other street performances. During Tết, we are reminded of not saying or doing bad things.
