Nice find by Traces of Texas. This pic is from 1955 in Bryan, TX. It shows News Talk 1620 WTAW DJ A.J. Winn paying a young artist (who some of you might recognize) his take from a show he played in town that night. In a cigar box. In addition to that guy, Winn also hosted concerts for Hank Williams Sr, George Jones, Loretta Lynn, Bob Wills, and more. When they played and did promo on his show, hotels at the time were a little scarce so Winn put them up at his house. Elvis stayed there a week saying I can travel with A J Winn and learn the music business”, as he sat in with him on-air. His sign off every night was, This is your ole DJ A.J. saying so long, keep those cards and letters coming. If the Good Lord’s willing and the creek don’t rise, I’ll be right here tomorrow, same time, same place, WTAW 1150 on your dial”. This is the kind of thing I love to read when ever I fool myself to think that Ive done something in this business. Compared to the old-timers...were all just pretending!!
