Nicholas Wolterstorff suggesting that praise music is based on the premise that the congregation is reduced to an audience and does not participate in the singing. That hasnt been my experience, especially with young folks who know the songs. How much responsibility falls to the congregation/worshippers to learn and come to know and participate? . Beyond that, I have spent many worship services in places where the choir and organ are considered performance art with the congregation as audience--to the point that one dares not move, nor even breathe, during the prelude or postlude.
