Nicolls Fire Update Location: Kiavah Wilderness, southeast of Onyx Acres Burned: 1,447 Structures Threatened: 0 Containment: 55% Structures Destroyed: 0 Fire Started: July 11, 2014 Injuries: 0 Cause: Unknown Total personnel assigned to the Fire: 879 Summary: The fire is located in the Scodie Mountains, within the boundaries of the Kiavah Wilderness Area. Since this is a remote, roadless area with steep rocky terrain, helicopter use is essential to deliver crews and their equipment to the fire line. Helicoptors are providing much needed support in this remote area. New dip tanks were set up closer to the fire to reduce travel time for helicopters. With this support from helicoptors dropping water and retardant, crews made substantial progress in building fire line today. Thunderstorms are predicted for tomorrow, which could present challenges with dry lightning and higher winds. Firefighters will continue to build fire line tomorrow as weather conditions permit. Camp 9 is closed to house the Incident Command Post. Evacuations: None Closures: ORDER NO. 14-3. Pursuant to 16 USC 551 and 36 CFR 261.50 a & b, and to provide for public safety, forest roads and trails in the Nicolls Fire area have been closed and will remain in effect until the fire has been fully suppressed.
