Nigeria, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Tanzania and Ethiopia currently account for about 413 million people living below poverty line in Africa. This is about half of the continent’s population. Unfortunately this article says that this is so despite impressive and robust population growth - a missed opportunity for a clear positioning of the most serious challenge facing Africa today. Population growth anywhere in the world today is dispiriting. Nigeria, DRC, Tanzania and Ethiopia are all high fertility countries, which makes the challenges of educating, feeding, housing and finding employment for already vast numbers of people in need ever more difficult.
