Nigerias Education Sector. I wrote WASSCE two years back, I didnt make a paper. Centre ish... I registered for the exam this year. I didnt even prepare for the exam. I was working, and my thought was,Shebi, I need just Biology, Ill focus on that alone. During the exam, I was disappointed at what I went through. All candidates were asked to pay a sum of five hundred naira for each paper. Lol,see gobe. I went to meet the man in charge. Whats the money for? I asked. What do you mean,Whats the money for? I already paid for this exam,Why should I be asked to pay again? dont you want to pass this exam? Of course!!! Am I here to fail? Then you have to pay this money Im Sorry sir,Im doing no such thing. You want to prove born again abi? My religion has nothing to do with this!!!!! Its wrong. And its illegal! Ok nah he said. And that was it. This man took me to a separate hall. Not only me tho... Other students were there. He cursed and ranted. Said things like shebi, na una dey go church pass? Una go fail this exam. Any of you Who cheats will be sent out. During the English language examination, We were joined together, for fear of external supervisor. Being that Ive always being above average in the subject, I concluded mine and decided to watch others. I watched this girl. She was confused! She kept on looking around and fidgeting. She hadnt even started her letter writing. She waited for her friend to write a story for her,Which She later copied down in her answer script. Her writing was useless!!! I thought Damn... See the leaders of tomorrow. This girl is a science student. She attends a private school, Which was Where I wrote my exam. That school is one of the best around. And She couldnt even construct a sentence in English language. I was appalled. Me wey even attend government school come better pass am. I didnt prepare for the exam cause I was nonchalant about it. I didnt read cause I hate reading textbooks. But the results came out,and I did pretty well. More than my expectations. And Im happy about it. Happy because its a result of my effort. I didnt pay to pass,neither did I photocopy anyones work. Nigerias education sector is going down the drain. The private sector are into it for the money. They allow malpractise, even encourage it. I was insulted, embarrassed and disgraced because I didnt pay for it. The problem with our country, is that the government has really relegated Education to the background. While the private individuals have decided to use it as a money making sector,Which it shouldnt be. Children no longer read books. Graduates cant even construct a good sentence. I throw salute for this sick country. *drops pen*
