Nine years ago today: Hurricane Katrina hit the Gulf Coast and devastated 90,000 square miles. The Vietnamese Buddhist temple in Biloxi flooded as it was being dedicated, trapping the sangha in the attic. Many small communities were devastated. It wasnt really a hurricane that hit New Orleans, though. It was the failure of the levees, the government, the mainstream media, and a lot of other forces as powerful as hurricanes. Nevertheless other forces contended with them, to succour, rescue, aid, support, shelter, rebuild, and more. Much of the damage and all the deaths were irreparable. But many remarkable things also happened in the aftermath. A different city exists today. And the ways the city and hundreds of thousands of lives were changed is complex. The catastrophe changed me too.
