Njovu helps former refugees to successfully integrate in Zambian - TopicsExpress

Njovu helps former refugees to successfully integrate in Zambian society. We have therefore joined forces with Caritas Czech Republic and the UN Refugee Agency to support skills training and business in the refugee camps in Western Zambia. The programme involves a number of activities such as forming small groups to raise funds through livestock farming or hammer mill production, entrepreneurship workshops for local communities or intense skills training programmes for young people. Our aim is to equip people with skills that will help them to survive on their own. Roughly a half of the participants are former refugees, mostly from Angola. Earlier this year, the government launched an integration programme that helps them to become independent Zambian citizens. Some of the refugees have however spent their entire life in the refugee camps in Mayukwayukwa and Meheba and have literally never been on their own. The other half of the people taking part in our support programme are ordinary Zambians living in the communities nearby. Life is not easy for them, either. The refugee affected areas suffer from scarce resources, lack of basic infrastructure and virtually non-existent industries. Most of their inhabitants don’t access any higher education and only survive thanks to simple farming. The integration programme that started this year may be a great challenge to some. We want to turn it into a great chance for all.
