No Gain With Bhupinder Bhubaneswar : 12/March/2014 Did the ruling BJD gain by inducting Congress leader and ex-leader of opposition Bhupinder Singh into the party? It may be politically correct for the BJD supremo Naveen Patnaik, but the ruling party hardly gained from the exercise than just weakening the state’s main opposition party. Bhupinder Singh in no way adding to Naveen’s popularity. In a way, Bhupinder’s ouster from the Congress will indirectly help the BJP, opined the political observers. It is a fact that Naveen has given a big blow to the Congress, but indirectly helped the BJP as Bhupinder’s resignation episode has also not been appreciated by the people at large. The people who believe in democratic system do not accept Singh’s resignation at this juncture of politics. Further, they also do not appreciate Naveen giving shelter to a leader who could quit the party for some reason or the other. Though it is a fact that Jena brothers were calling shots, Singh should instead face it politically than quitting the party just before the elections. Singh’s resignation has, however, to some extent helped the Congress also. The party’s central leadership has started a damage control exercise by calling its senior leaders from the state for a discussion at Delhi. Had Singh not been taken into the BJD, the Congress central leadership might not have given much importance to the development. Former PCC President Niranjan Patnaik and senior leader Narashingha Mishra attended the coordination meeting chaired by the screening committee chief for Odisha Oscar Fernandes Considered as Singh effect, Fernandes has reportedly asked the state PCC leaders to resolve differences and work together and rejuvenate the party rank and file. Now, under the changed situation, senior party leaders will certainly raise voice against negligence. The picture given by OPCC president Jaydev Jena and party’s campaign committee chairman and union minister Srikant Jena will no more be totally accepted by the Congress’s central leadership. Besides Singh, a number of leaders latest being Ashok Samal have quit the party. Ramakrushna Patnaik, Anup Sai, Sura Sethi, Sanatan Mahakud, Alok Nayak and Arya Kumar Gyanendra have meanwhile left Congress.
