No Horn Day? Well! Well!! Well!!! If the reason is to check noise pollution in Lagos, then I think drivers are the wrong people to target. Hooting the horn doesnt cause the noise nuisance as much as those guys selling audio/Video CD by the roadsides and in the nieghbourhoods. We all know this! So why leave the main problem and chasing some trivial issues! These guys that sell audio/video CDs are scattered everywhere, and their noise is continuous from dusk till dawn at a deafening decibel. The worship centres are also not left out although those ones are intermittent. The worship centres (churches and mosques) should be told to remove the megaphones they usually hang infront of their buildings. I wish the government does something about them, most especially the audio/Video CD sellers Back to No-horn: Yeah! As good as this idea may appear I am looking at it from some other perspectives. The function of a horn in a car is to alert other road users. It can also be used to warn other road users of a hazard. For example a pedestrian attempts to suddenly cross the road without looking properly, you must use your horn to alert the person. Another example is a car veering or reversing towards your car without realizing that your car is beside/behind (that is hazardous). You have to hoot to call his attention. What happens if there is no way to alert other road users of hazards? Accidents may occur! For this reason, I am not too comfortable with this no-horn day thing. So what happens after today? Vehicle users can return to their normal way of blaring their horns indiscriminately! I think what should be done is continuous orientation of vehicle users (cars, trucks, okadas, keke marwa etc) on how to use their horns sanely. Ministries of Environment, Transportation and the Federal Road Safety Commission should look into this. NB: I quite agree that some or many drivers/riders can be very annoying and irritating with the way they horn
