No..I am not wishing any one a happy independence day. I dont believe we have paid for it,nor have we recognised the worth of what was paid by our predecessors on our behalf. Day by day, minute by minute, we continue to breach that trust that was placed on the generations to come to regard the blood and toil that was spent since 1857 with respect. We are mired in corrruption, in poverty (materialistic ,intellectual and emotional), in irresponsibility. What happiness are we talking about after 66 years of “freedom”? It is not about how many years have passed, it is about how these years have been spent. We are still in our make believe world of believing the “stories” created in our minds of leading an independent life, even as we are unwilling to unfold our own myth! Our country is now one where we allow the hands that were supposed to feed us to prevent us from feeding ourselves. It is high time we accepted total responsibility for what each of us have done, not done, ought to have done and ought not to have done. Starting from us- that is, you and I, then to our parents and children, our village or district, our state, our country, the globle, the universe..and so on. We are more criminal than the perpretrators of a manacled India , because we knowingly tie ourselves down. We have no respect for the culture (I dont mean the bookish one that we claim to be proud of), our natural resources, our inherent capabilities, fellow beings (man or animal). We dont allow freedom to others ,yet demand it for ourselves. We keep our houses clean, by throwing our garbage on public property. We despise paying our taxes, we refuse to vote, we dont have a collective sytem for conservation -of nature or any form of energy , we spend crores on a marriage, but shirk from feeding or teaching a poor child, or giving a hundred rupee raise to the maid. We depend on our soldiers for each day of our sustenance, but fail to even spare a thought to the hundreds fo policemen, traffic police, railway police, men in the armed forces, or the security of the security guard of our building! Happy independence day??? No. Let us first deserve it. Let us start working towards the happiness that comes only from striving to be responsible. Let us each become conscious of what each of us can do,and do it.My apologies to Mangal Pandey, Gandhi, Bhagat Singh, Azad, Sukhdev , Rajguru, Lal Bahadur Shastri, Nehru, Subhashchandra Bose, Tagore, Lakshmi Bai, Sarojini Naidu, Subramania Bharathi.....and all the valiant men and women who fought their own battles and sang their songs to inspire a Jai Hind. And lets hope to make Bharat actually mahaan again, rather than fool ourselves.
