No, Its Not THAT Important. Yesterday I stood near the doorway of an ICU room in Santa Clara as my uncle slowly awoke from the anesthesia and as his younger daughter -- a newly-minted licensed nurse -- and his assigned nurse Erika talked shop. Another nurse, Cynthia, waved as she walked past the room, and then stopped in her tracks and took a couple of steps back. She glared at me and said, Roll Tide. I looked down and realized I was wearing my blue and orange Auburn t-shirt. Erika, ignorant about football and curious about her friend Cynthias reaction to my shirt, asked what the big deal was. Cynthia -- an Alabama native -- went on a good-natured but serious, five-minute monologue about the Alabama-Auburn rivalry. She shared about how she had worn Alabama swag on her scrubs at work on Saturday and checked the Alabama-Fla. Intl. score every couple of minutes as she made her rounds; how she refused to buy her mother a SF Giants t-shirt just because it had orange on it; and how anyone who rooted for both Alabama and Auburn was 1) untrustworthy and thus 2) really an Auburn fan. Then she issued the climactic statement: My aunt is an Auburn fan. I love my aunt six days a week during the season, but on Saturdays -- pardon my language -- if my aunt was on fire, I wouldnt piss on her to put her out. After completing her diatribe, a smiling Cynthia moved on, and Erika, confused by Cynthias passion for the Tide and against the Tigers, took a few beats and then asked, These are SCHOOLS?
